Happy New Year!

Starting off the New Year with some personal and some business! Maybe a little more personal 🙂 …

Clearly we all go into a New Year thinking positive motivational ideas and analyzing our objectives and goals.  I will read 20 books! I will lose 20 pounds! I will get up earlier! …

I think every single advertisement lately on Instagram has been related to self awareness or getting a lean body in just 21 days!  I will admit I have hit CLICK HERE or LEARN MORE a few times in the past week.  I’ve analyzed a treadmill running app and have entered my email address for more info on a digital business that has changed lives.  Does it really? Not sure! Ha!

2018 has been a year of change for me.  To say my oldest child moving to University was like cutting a limb off is an understatement.  I had no idea how hard that would hit me.  Have I gone into hiding in the last couple years? 100% yes.  On a positive note she was 8 hours away last year and this fall she transferred to a University only 2 hours away! So this fall we got to visit quite a few times – I finally took a breathe and thought – I’m going to be OK!?  What?!! I lived!!! I’ve realized my children still need me once they move out and I’ll always be a MOM.  The best and hardest job ever.  It’s who I’ve been for 20 years and I am the most luckiest mom in the world to have these two.

Which brings me to the business aspect of my life.  I’ve really spent the last year analyzing I can literally do anything now!? No more 3PM school pick-ups or weekend hockey tournaments.  It’s life changing! Along with managing vacation rentals, I decided to take a job at a winery.  We live in the most beautiful Okanagan Wine Country and we are surrounded by vineyards!   Why not, when it’s in your back yard! So I signed up for the WSET Level 1 course in the Spring, basically out of curiosity.  The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) is a global organization which arranges courses and exams in the field of wine and spirits. I worked part-time all summer and enjoyed the experience so much this fall I signed up for WSET Level 2.  Super excited to get confirmation yesterday I officially passed!!! Where does this take me? I have no idea! lol I figure when you end up with some free time in your life – taking courses can only benefit you!  I’ve already got the next course lined up…

I have no idea where my professional future is headed and feeling lost 6 months ago has turned into this new found excitement of the unknown.  I took a good 6 month break from posting on social media, signed up to volunteer at 2 local organizations (animals and youths) and really tried to find a path that made me happy.  Insert Note here: Extremely lucky to have the most amazing spouse! I’ve been extra needy, extra emotional and really extra everything. Considering he was so happy when the first child ventured out, he clearly thinks I’ve lost my marbles.  I’m happy to now say – I think I did lose them!!

I know that I’m not alone in this situation. So many moms go through almost a mourning period when a child leaves. AND you know what? It’s OK.  When you live your life for someone else for so many years – it’s OK to not be OK for awhile. It’s an important period in life.  I started to appreciate waking up everyday to calmness versus those memorable chaotic days as a parent.  Not like parents don’t deserve a little break after so many years right? Embrace it!

So now it’s time to get back in the saddle! I want a professional path that is rewarding not exhausting. I really do want to feel truly fulfilled and what taught me that was volunteering. There are so many reasons why you need to be giving back in your community.  I’ve met amazing new friends and I was involved in a great event that raised a ton of money for youths.  It’s simply just good for the soul!  I have future plans with a few new fundraisers happening locally and I even applied to foster a cat and pay for her adoption fee.  (Again – great spouse for agreeing to help with both).  Did I mention we got to pick up Canadian Country Artist Aaron Pritchett at the airport?  Fun times!!

With all the changes I’ve also realized I do not enjoy managing vacation rentals.  I’m very capable of being a property manager but sitting and staring at a possible broken dishwasher running on the September long weekend was a turning point for me.  So I’m slowly removing that from the job description.  Which is OK – I could of stayed at that for 10 unhappy years right?  It’s one of those things that I fell into – not a bucket list career!

I read an article that said do what people love about you? So I asked a few friends and some comments were:

  • “Great Design Ideas”
  • “Loves Animals”
  • “Great Fashion Style”
  • “Extremely Organized” (OK, some said bossy and OCD! ha)
  • “Great host and Party Planner”

Things I love – Interior Design, Fashion, Animals, Wine, online shopping, and I love being involved in Projects and Events.  Possible hint at future course?!  Maybe!

Cheers to 2018! A year of so many laughs, great events, excessive amounts of champagne, and amazing friendships and family!

Happy New Year everyone! Take time for yourself and sign up to volunteer in your community.

Crystal
